View of one of the houses in Trevelin
| 3/25/2004 | La Nacion
Trevelin is the town of windmills where Welsh winds still blow
It is a natural refuge, located close to Esquel, in the Chubut province

A lot of tulips are found at the entrance of this small and picturesque town and reflect the colorful history of the European pioneers who in mid XIX century fought the worst adversities of the Patagonian solitude.
Trevelin is found in a green and panoramic valley, only 14 miles from Esquel, west of the Chubut province. Cwm Hifryd (Beautiful Valley) is the name given by these pioneers.
Tevelin has 12,300,000 acres of forests, lakes, rivers, snowy mountains. If you like sports, Tevelin has the best fishing place for salmon fishing (it is supposed to be one of the most important places in the world), canoeing, trekking, horse-riding and tours to places of outstanding beauty.
The Celtic gastronomy is exquisite and is prepared by the descendants of the welsh pioneers.
Trevelin is a welsh word and it jeans Windmill Town, because this area produced one of the best wheat in the country. One of them is the Andes and Company Windmill, where you can find the Regional Museum. It is considered one of the most important museums, because you can find hundreds of documents and old parts used by the Welsh people when they found the colony.

Only 13 miles away, on a mountain, you will find a copy of the original family windmill built by the pioneer Thomas Evans great-grandson and named Nant Fach. During the tour Mervyn Evans will explain the story of the colonization and he will start the hand-crafted windmill which produces whole wheat like 120 years ago
Clero Evans is the grand-daughter of the Welshman John Daniel Evans. At her house, Castref Taid (Grand-Father’s house), built with wood, reed and sun-dried brick, Miss Clery also tells the story of his grand-father. In the garden lies the tomb of Mala Cara, the horse that saved the life of the pioneer in a desperate flight and avoided an Indian ambush.

From Trevelin, visits or tours can be organized to many different places. For example, a tour to the Nant and Fall waterfall. You will see three different and impressive falls in only one quarter of a mile; the tallest is 230 ft. tall. The waterfalls are in the Provincial Tourist Reserve.
One of the most beautiful places to visit is the National Park Los Alerces, only 16 miles from Trevelin. It is considered one of the most important and well-kept parks in the country, with 26,000,000 acres which allow marine excursions to Futalaufquen lakes, Arrayanes river, the Green Lake, and Rivadavia Lake. You can also tour the forest of the ancient “alerces”.

Futalaufquen big basin that includes more than 15 big lakes of glacier origin and hundreds of streams and rivers is according to the experts, one of the best places for trout fishing. This is the reason why a lot of enthusiast people meet in this area between November and April for the fishing of big pieces.

Apart from the well-known lakes that are found in the National Park Los Alerces (Futalaufquen, Menendez, Verde, etc.), there are also other spots in Trevelin like Rosario and Greda lakes, Corintos and Futaleufu rivers with the same or better opportunities of fishing.

You can find Rainbow Trouts, Marrons, Fontinalis, Encerrado Salmons, Perch and Pejerreys.
You will be able to get complete information about the places of fishing, at the Information Office, kind of fishing allowed (Fly casting, Spinning, Trolling) and if you wish you can contract a guide with a boat which will increase your chances of a goof fishing day.
The officials also invite the sportsmen to practice the “Catch and Release” .

Irresistible Cakes

On your return from the tours, you won’t resist the temptation of a classic welsh tea, with lots of cakes and regional sweets.

There are many tourist areas to visit: Futaleufu Hydroelectric complex, the International Pass of the same name, Rosario lake where you will find Amuan Ñi Rucamo (The Craftswoman’s House), which exhibits and sells Mapuche’s crafts and will show you the Indian ancient looms and techniques.

You can also visit the big cities: Esquel, the biggest city by the Andes, and you can take the old Patagonian Train, La Trochita to visit the Indian reserve Nahuel Pan.
